हिन्दी दैनिक जनसत्ता में प्रकाशित एक पत्र में अभिषेक त्रिपाठी ने कुछ विद्वानों के इस प्रस्ताव पर टिप्पणी की है कि यदि हिन्दी भाषा में अंग्रेजी आदि भाषाओं से शब्द मिला लिए जाएँ, तो इसे अधिक समृद्ध बनाया जा सकता है ।
दो एक बातें जोडना चाहूँगा। मानव सभ्यता के विकास के साथ-साथ नए-नए शब्द भाषा में प्रवेश करते रहते हैं । ऐसा नहीं है कि चार आदमी एक जगह बैठे और यह निर्धारण किया कि अब से हम अमुक वस्तु को अमुक शब्द से निरूपित करेंगे । ठीक उसी प्रकार संस्कृतियों और सभ्यताओं के परस्पर संपर्क में आने पर शब्दों का आदान-प्रदान होता है । किसी अन्य भाषा के शब्दों का आयात तथा प्रयोग कृत्रिम पद्धति से नहीं होता है ।
इसमें दो-राय नहीं कि भाषा का लचीलापन उसकी समृद्धि और प्रगति के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण कारक है। यही बात मानव व्यक्तित्व और विचारों पर भी लागू होती है । लेकिन साथ ही यह भी ध्यान में रखना चाहिए कि कहीं भाषा का निज वैशिष्ट्य और पहचान ही नष्ट न हो जाए ।
जो भी हो, लेख बहुत ही सुंदर है । साथ ही यह भी ध्यान देने योग्य है कि उक्त विचारधारा का समर्थन करते हुए भी, लेखक ने स्वयं शुद्ध एवं परिष्कृत हिन्दी का प्रयोग किया है । क्या यही कुछ इंगित नहीं करता ?

Meri koshish hai ki hindi ki practice karni chahiyey. Angrezi ke shabdon ka samgrah kar, hum apni soch par aakraman karengey, yah baat samajhna aavashyak hai. Angrezon ney bahut nuksaan kiya hai, aur hum usi prayatn ko badhava kyon dena chahtey hai?

मैं आज तक समझता था कि वह उक्ति पंo नेहरू की है, आज पता चला कि महात्मा गाँधी की है । उक्ति इस प्रकार है — “I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the culture of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.”
अंग्रेजी जानना, प्रयोग करना, उससे लाभ उठाना, सभी कुछ अच्छा है । बस इतना ध्यान रहे कि हमारे व्यक्तित्व की भारतीयता नष्ट न होने पाए । आपने लेख के अंत में दिया गया वीडियो तो देख ही लिया होगा । ऐसी अवस्था कभी नहीं आनी चाहिए ! वह तो भयानक स्थिति होगी ।

I completely agree with you Vandana. In fact, that is the bottomline.
English has developed to the present level because it freely accepted influence of other languages- As for example many words such as ‘Guru’ have come into the language from India. I feel that most of our fears are misplaced. Tamil language was so much richer and spread globally when it was less restrictive in approach (before throwing out some alphabets which they believed Sanskrit sounding origin).
Sorry Sir, it is not entirely correct. Though assimilation of other languages was an advantage for English, several other factors were also at play. To give you just one example, there was a partial ban on other languages esp German after world war I and a complete ban after world war II. Scientists from German speaking countries were banned from attending international conferences, research papers in German were simply declined — even though it was the ‘official’ language of science. The general public was also harassed, the slogan being — “Do you want to speak the language of our enemy?” The administration of major scientific bodies was also taken over by English speaking countries. Thus, German, French and Russian speaking scientists had no other option other than to learn and work in English. You can find further details on the internet. For example, please see this page: How did English become the language of science? The story was not different in India either. Indian culture was looked down upon by the British. Once they took over the education system of India, English was made compulsory.
Nevertheless, I do agree that flexibility is an important factor in the development and growth of any language. It also brings in freshness and variety in the language. Imagine what would Hindi look like had there not been contribution from Punjabi, English, and above all, Urdu. But as stressed in this article, assimilation should go only to the extent that the originality and individuality of the language is not lost. It is like cooking vegetables. One or two potatoes are added to two or three capsicums. But if someone adds 5-6 potatoes to one capsicum, it becomes something entirely different 😀
“Nevertheless, I do agree that flexibility is an important factor in the development and growth of any language. It also brings in freshness and variety in the language.”. This was all I was trying to convey. We are both on the same side.:)

The video is a grim reminder of how we are slowly losing grip over our native language and culture due to the dominance of western values.
As you said it is good to integrate good values from other cultures. But we should not be swept off our feet.
Yes Sir. India is bound to become a superpower sooner than anticipated earlier. But if such is the condition of society, then I am afraid to say that that superpower would not be India as we see it, instead a desi caricature of some western nation.
Some time back my uncle said to me succinctly — “Your identity is by your culture only”. Well, it says all.
Agree that the response of the so called celebrity in the video is atrocious. But then it is high time we stopped giving so much of importance to such characters. They are so much inthe minority and their influence on the huge poulation of the country is minimal.
I completely disagree with you on this. Every day I meet several students who are ignorant about their own language. Some of them are even proud of their ignorance!
Second proposition is also incorrect. It is a big mistake to underestimate the influence of celebrities on general population, especially youth. However, their influence is not the theme of this post. The video was shared to illustrate the prevailing importance given to English at the cost of Indian languages.
